JAPAN'S whaling organisation is using video footage to blame Greenpeace for the collision in Antarctic waters on Sunday between the whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru and the environment organisation's Arctic Sunrise.

The Institute for Cetacean Research released video footage that it said showed the Greenpeace ship had time to avoid a collision but rammed the factory ship.

The footage appeared to show Arctic Sunrise approaching the Nisshin Maru despite repeated warnings over a loud hailer to stand clear. The bow of Arctic Sunrise then struck the side of the Nisshin Maru almost square on, before bouncing down its side.
